A LITTLE ABOUT STORY, WYOMING...

Our town is located as high on the Big Horn Mountain of Wyoming as you can go and still be in a year-round community.  Located at about 5000 ft above sea level, we are half way between Sheridan, WY and Buffalo, WY.  We are quite near I-90, but if you don't know we are here, you would drive right past us.

The town itself is actually a huge cul-de-sac since our two main roads (paved State Hwys) dead end on the mountain.  Thus you have to go back out of town the same way you came in.  We think that this non-pass-through nature adds much to the character of our community.

Our weather here is somewhat different from Sheridan and Buffalo, Wyoming due to the altitude.  Generally, we are 10 degrees warmer in the winter (cold air slides right by us) and 10 degrees cooler in the summer.  But, we get more snow than either of those two neighboring towns.

And you will ask, "How much snow?" Well, it depends on the winter.  My approach to it is that I always keep a winter coat handy just in case, even in the summer.  Some years we seem to shovel a lot and other years not so much.  Locals say that we average between 150 to 175 inches per winter.  Couldn't prove it by me!  I just know that, having come from near Pittsburgh, PA, I certainly appreciate the big blue sky and the sunshine all winter long!  And the air is such that the edges of things even far away are crisp and sharp.  A real treat for the eyes!

Our "main" street or "business" district is about a block long.  There you will find the world wide headquarters of the Electronic Classroom Furniture Systems, the Piney Creek General Store and the Waldorf a' Story Deli, the Story Post Office, the Story Art Station, the Fire Department, the Woman's Club, and the Library.  AND we now  have a gas station (at very competitive prices, too) and an ATM machine at our local convenience store.   Story Realty is right around the corner from the Art Station.

As of November, 2006, we have CELL PHONE  service along with several sources of high speed Internet service.  (There are those who woe the day cell service came to Story...and many who rejoice!)

Almost everyone gets their mail delivery at a post office box which means that twice a day there could be a "traffic jam" there...around 10:30 am when the boxes are filled and again around 2:30 pm when the Sheridan Press is delivered.  Once again, I am of the opinion that this feature adds much to the nature of our community.,..it's nice to see, meet and greet friends and neighbors while getting the mail.
